Where are people getting that Dwayne is being offered for the Genie? I can picture him more, but I don't think he is the right one. Is this going to be another Belle fiasco?

People are talking about how he would be better for the role than Will Smith. Nobody said he was offered anything. I don’t know what Belle fiasco you’re referring to they should avoid. Another billion at the box office?

I presume the Belle fiasco means how Belle was played by an actor who really wasn't right to play her.

I’m not sure why Disney would consider that casting a fiasco at all. I know I don't.
The Rock would do really well as the Genie, imo. *shrug*

I agree, I don't think Disney would consider Emma Watson's casting to be a fiasco especially since initial surveys showed a large percentage of people were excited for the film just because she was in the lead. It's mostly just fans and even those are split between loving her and hating her. She has a lot of haters and lovers equally it seems.

This is not very reassuring.
In the meantime, his hands are full with a live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Aladdin.” That could be a bit of a tightrope, however, for a property that was criticized even in its day for derogatory Arab stereotypes. Is that something Ritchie has his eye on at all, particularly with heightened contemporary sensitivity to these issues?
“Decency is decency. Humanity is humanity. I think the film will dictate exactly what the tone is supposed to be and who’s supposed to be in it,” Ritchie says. “You just don’t want to feel like you’re muscled into it, because you’re bullied into it. It will be what it will be, because it should be what it should be. It will have its own authentic voice, and you don’t want that voice contaminated by a PC army.”

That's plenty assuring to me. Screw the pc police. Tumblr blogs will do their thing regardless. Just don't go out of your way to offend and let certain people complain.

Yeah, I don’t find it reassuring if they’re already giving people the finger out the gate. Basically saying to prepare for Selena Gomez as Jasmine.

That's not what he's saying at all. The question was about their portrayal of Arab stereotypes in general. Not about casting choices. I realize who they cast will factor into that, but I really think he was referring more to writing and the bigger picture. No sense reading more into it.

Yeah I agree with this reading. Hopefully it means that Jasmine's outfit will actually look like the film or musical and not what she is wearing in the Disney Parks right now.

That's exactly what he said:
I think the film will dictate exactly what the tone is supposed to be and who’s supposed to be in it,”
Basically saying "We'll cast a lily-white guy from Maine if we want to! Screw you people for caring about representation--Johnny Depp was great as Tonto!"
And the (deserved) outrage would be larger than usual I’m guessing considering the film’s characters are Muslim, who are Undesirable No. 1 already under full attack these days.

The director talks about Aladdin in a new interview.
Ritchie told us that he thinks “it’d be tough not to make [Aladdin] a musical,” which makes sense given the energy of the original film. He added that it was “too early” to say more, “because I’ve really just immersed myself into that project. So I’m still looking for cast members, we still haven’t found exactly which direction we’re going in. I’m confident that at some stage it will reveal itself to me, but right now it’s just a bit too premature.”

Imo, making Aladdin a musical or not shouldn't even be up for discussion. After BATB's reception, I can't imagine Disney not wanting Aladdin to follow in that footsteps. Has Menken said anything about being approached for the live-action Aladdin? I wonder if he'll pen new songs or use some of the scrapped Ashman/musical ones. A favorite of mine is To Be Free, Jasmine's solo from the Disneyland Musical Spectacular, but I don't think he was responsible for creating that.

Considering Mulan wont be a musical unfortunately it was something that had to be addressed/questioned.

I think there's a big difference though between Mulan's music and that of Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. The latter two have hugely popular and iconic songs that are instantly recognizable all over the world. Plus both those films are very much set up in the Broadway musical style so keeping a close adaptation without the songs would be almost impossible. Mulan only has four songs and really only one of them is super popular and really only amongst today's generation of Disney fans. The only other song somewhat well known is Reflection but most people associate that with Christina Aguilera rather than Mulan. I might be one of the few people who thinks Mulan doesn't really need songs.

honestly the songs of Mulan aren't that good, so I'm okay with them being cut.

Agreed.
Beauty and the Beast and
Aladdin are known for their songs (due to their position in Disney's Renaissance and history) and therefore associated with them. Whereas
Mulan is less recognized for it's songs. Therefore the songs won't be a huge loss in the live action remake of
Mulan.

She is of Yemeni and Egyptian ancestry on her mother's side.
