 If they put Scuttle in the air, he'd be blocking the view of the castle, and if he was under the sea, he'd drown.

Anyway, to Aladdin from Agrabah, DisneyDuster, Pasta, everyone else who doesn't understand my surface-obsession:

I know that the cover shows both sea and surface, but my main gripe is that it's too damn cluttered in the cover, and they should get rid of one or the other to make a more cleaner picture. I have nothing against the sea, but when I think of The Little Mermaid, I always think of her sitting on the rock longing to be part of the land. Yes, the movie takes place under the sea and on the surface. Yes, a lot of people enjoy the sea segments, they are perhaps some of the most memorable sequences for them. But I personally would enjoy a cover more if it showed Ariel perched on the rock, which itself is a classic Little Mermaid pose (there's a statue in Denmark of her in the same pose), and while it's not a kiddiefied look, it's a more artistic one. The cover is fine if you want something attention-grabbing, but I just think it's too cluttered, too messy. It's nice that they're trying to show two worlds, but in my opinion, the way they present the two worlds just doesn't grab me like it does many others here and I'd rather see a cover the focuses on one world more than the other (and the world would be the surface for me).

Escapay wrote: You seem to be under the impression that just because my opinions differ from yours, mine must be wrong. I don't understand why it was my opinion that got picked on, and why I'm being met with such fierce replies, but I stand by them. The cover is too messy, and I'd much prefer if it kept a theme of longing for the land. They could easily have the land/shore on one side of the cover (preferably the front) and the sea on the other side (the back?).

Escapay
I know I'm being predictable, but I have to reply that. I didn't say you're wrong. Of course this discussion does not make sense any more, because our opinions differ. BUT I THINK I STLL HAVE THE RIGHT to support my opinions, the same way you do! Maybe you are the one who's obsessed with your opinions and can't accept anything else. But this is becoming too personal, so I'll stop it here.
So....nice cover, isn't it??? :)

Waterworld?

yeah, but Ursula is scarier that Waterworld Dennis Hopper.
now Blue Velvet Dennis Hopper on the other hand...

EDIT: Figured what I had to say wasn't worth saying as it did nothing to move forward the discussion about the cover and moved more into the off-topic-ness of opinions, so I cut it all out except for the only thing that was on topic:

I don't like the cover, for aestetic reasons. It has nothing to do with the movie, it has nothing to do with the SEA, but just in my personal tastes. If anyone disagrees with my personal tastes and believes that they must be wrong in some sense, that's their problem.

Not the best cover I've ever seen, but not the worst either.

I agree with Escapay and others who say it seems cluttered, but I don't hate it. I like the coloring of Ariel's hair very, very much...just wish they hadn't really changed the design of Ariel for merchandise and publicity the way they have...there was a piece of publicity art that looked like a screencap but didn't actually show a scene from the movie that had Ariel in that EXACT same pose looking a lot more on-model. I prefer the original VHS cover image (thought the layout was better), but I can certainly live with this.

But no matter. I knew I'd be buying the DVD no matter what the cover art looked like, because TLM is (along with Aladdin) my favorite movie ever, and definitely worth upgrading from the single-disc Limited Issue DVD. (And if there's a gift set...I'll probably buy that and it will be in a box that will likely have different art than the DVD cover anyway. :P)

Hey! Does anyone know if there is going to be a like special edition soundtrack to the little mermaid? I know that there were special edition soundtracks to beauty and the beast, the lion king, aladdin, and cinderella, but has ultimatedisney said anything about it? I would really like to know so I can save up for it. I love Menken's music to every disney movie that he's done music for, ecspecially for the little mermaid. So if anyone knows, just post. I'll greatly appreciate it. I don't know if someone's already ask this question or not, so sorry if they did. I just kinda really wanna know the answer. Thanks!

Walt Disney Records isn't quite at good at making their release plans known far in advance and for some reason, at least as far as I know, that branch doesn't lend itself much to inside scoops or speculation. That said, I'm certain that some kind of Little Mermaid CD releases will be coming alongside the DVD in October. Will it be a Read-Along, a Little Mermaid and Friend-type deal, a Special Edition soundtrack, or all of the above? I don't know, and I'm not even sure if WDR knows for sure. Certainly, none of them are likely to show up for preorder until around August or September if/when plans become concrete.

Thanks Luke! I really hope that they have the Special Edition soundtrack, that would really boost my spirits, because I am in love with this movie!

This seems a bit off topic, but DVD Times has posted up the news confirming the release of TLM in October (will we have a high-res version of the cover art and complete details of all the bonus features soon?):
Buena Vista Home Entertainment have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Little Mermaid (Special Edition) for 3rd October 2006 priced at $29.99 SRP. Walt Disney proudly opens the vault to debut a spectacular new two-disc Special Edition of the most-requested Disney DVD title ever, the Academy Award® winning (1989 Best Song and Best Original Score), The Little Mermaid. The first time ever on a two-disc DVD, the eighth addition to Disney’s acclaimed “Platinum Collection,” this highly-anticipated release will feature a wealth of new material, none-of-which has been confirmed just yet but we are told details are forthcoming.

Holy crap, they brought Walt back to life just to release this DVD?! This thing must be really huge!

And since I just figured out I haven't posted feedback on the actual cover yet, I really like it. It's not better than the other Platinums, but it's not worse, either. Personally, I think it suits the movie well.

EDIT: Wait a second, I wasted my 1000th post giving feedback on a cover?! Gah, I was hoping to like.........save the world............with my 1000th post. Darn it...

Oh well, I'm the 46th member to reach 1000 posts!!!!

Wow, talk about a huge marketing push, they even un-froze Walt for it, The Little Mermaid must be really special.

I hope to see a a high-resolution version of the cover art in the Disney Insider from LATT and also I can't wait to know what bonus features this movie will have.

We got a long way to go before we October, so I think perhaps there is a great chance the cover art may change. To me, it will probably go through what Cameron's Titanic DVD cover did. Except it won't have famous people's faces slapped over the case and stuff like that.

Or an arm reaching out trying to grab the gold bald naked man at the other end of the cover!

I can't wait for The Little Mermaid to come out on Platinum Edition. I watched the movie that I have on VHS. The picture quality is terrible!!!!!! It's so grainy and sometimes the colors change on me! Oh well. I just really want The Little Mermaid to come out. I WANT IT!!!!! RIGHT NOW!! GRRR! I also wanna see a high-res picture for the cover. No offense, but the one on here is so small I can't make it out very well. I can still see it however. Oh well. Adios!

And a famous, popular director who thinks himself as God either! Although he didn't direct the movie or isn't in any way a director, it would be interesting to see a Little Mermaid cover with something like this.

Walt Disney Pictures Presents: The Little Mermaid: Platnium Edition and on the cover is a picture of Michael Eisner with a poster of the movie in his hands with the director too.

It's called cover ART

First of all, I'd like to say that I agree with all that Escapay has said. And although I would like a cover art for this DVD that is subtle (like the European cover for beauty and the Beast), I understand Disney's need to appeal to kids. This does not mean that they should cram EVERY character into the cover.
First, the composition is awful. Regardless if whether they are located over or under water, Ariel is not on a side nor at center! It actually makes me nervous to look at it. I think the ship is entirely pointless.
Now the thing that bothers me the most is the poor quality of the drawings. Not only are mostof the characters off-model (not looking like in the movie for you non-animation savants), they are BAD DRAWINGS. I am an animator myself, and whoever drew the characters for this cover did not understand the understructure of the design.
If anyone saw the preview for the Cinderella cover that came in the Aladdin booklet, they would have noticed that although the compsition is the same, the characters were re-drawn for the actual cover (and thank God, they looked awful in the preview..I still have issues with the prince). I'm praying they'll do the same for TLM, regardless of what composition they choose.
I guess we'll have to see what happens...can't wait to buy this DVD, but I don't want my eyes to hurt every time I look at the case...
