It's strange, I feel really, really sad. Kinda Heart - broken. So this is the real reason as to why we havnt heard anything on the movie. I really, really hope that Kene can pull it together. I don't want lasseter to ruin everything! :(

It's not actually new. It's from an animation seminar or something, I believe. And I am SO glad that the movie won't be Shrek-ish. Why would we want a movie that makes fun of the films we were hoping it would remind us of?

I kinda thought everything from Jim Hill was supposed to be taken with a grain of salt... I mean I know it's a lengthy article, but still...

I've always loved traditional animation over cgi, but I do love cgi if it's done right (which only accounts for one film as of now  ). I really hope that Rapunzel will continue to stay in cgi (and I'm sure it will, since there's already some cgi footage and stills we've seen). Other than that, hopefully Keane will work it all out since he loves it so much.

And heaven forbid it becomes something Shrek-ish. I've been a Shrek hater from the very beginning. If Rapunzel ends up like that, I will probably cry.

Just for all of your information, Jim Hill is only half-reliable half of the time. The rest is pure fiction.

I want Rapunzel to become a reality soon so badly. It just looks so pretty, so like the 90's movies I grew up with, but with a bonus. I am excited about Frog Princess too, but just not as much! I much prefer Alan Menken and the classic fairy-tale feeling Rapunzel seems to have. Reading the Jim Hill article made me sad

well, here's the thing.

If Glen Keane still hasn't been able to figure out story problems (and he's been doing that since 2002 now) then perhaps he isn't up to the job. He's not a story man. He needs to do visual development and maybe co-directing but he simply isn't making any proggress.

In the mean time Ron 'n John are moving at full speed on Frog Princess. Why? Probaply because they have a vision. Lasseter, as he has stated a zillion times, values that above everything.

and so do I

I think you are right. Glen should get help, or at the mildest, some advice. It's amazing with The Frog Princess. It's moving ahead at warp speed!

IMP note on Frog Princess:

It has not been officially clarified whether the animation will be out-sourced (like Enchanted) or done in-house. Of course, everyone wants it to be done in-house - but remember that Disney currently have no tools for 2D animation, so we can't take it for granted.

IMP note on Rapunzel:

As a final clarification, Rapunzel is not going to be Shrekified. That was a long time ago. A couple of years ago it was gonna be lke that but then it was re-tooled and the story should follow the original Rapunzel tale.

I'm saying this becuase a lot of people are confused and think that Rapunzel is still in the "Shrek" phase.

John Lasseter is in charge now, right? He wants more 2D movies from Disney, right? Then, why on Earth hasn't he starting putting back together the feature animation unit yet? It boggles my mind. He tells them that he wants more 2D, yet he has no way of doing that in-house? If it's true that he wants fewer CGI Disney movies, then that means that the animators need something to do. Oh, I know- have them make traditionally animated films! It's easy! I don't know what the ratio is at WDFA of traditional-animators-turned-CGI-animators to always-have-been-CGI-animators. I'm assuming that most of the artists that were laid off have been hired by someone. I'm sure that some (if not most) artists wouldn't mind going back to traditional animation...

interesting article. while it kinda looks like everything is up in the air at this point, I really hope that everyone can pull up their socks and get it done. I think Rapunzel has the potential to be a great film. I'll keep my fingers crossed. If the movie does get made, I have a feeling it wont be ready by the holiday season in 2010. maybe we'll see it in 2011.......

I wouldn't be so sure. Watch this amazing documentary by an ex-Disney animator called "Dream On, Silly Dreamer." If I had gone through that, I'm not sure I would ever return to work for Disney as an animator.

Personally I think Jim Hill is just trying to make us panic! He has been proved to be not the most reliable source, and to me a lot in this article seems like theories that he has made up.
So I wouldn't take this for granted, and Aladdin had real big story problems, and look what a lovely movie they gave us.

On the other hand, it wouldn't be a shame for Keane to accept some help, he's an animator, not a story writer.

Jim Hill is the same person who very recently claimed that American Dog and every single movie at WDFA in the future should be made as 2D, and that Glen Keane very soon could expect a meeting where he probably would get the message to make also Rapunzel in 2D.

Has anyone read what Rhett Wickham has posted under the article? Among other things, he writes;
"According to my sources the screening was a routine screening scheduled some time back. It was followed by notes, and the next screening was then scheduled for June. The June date is not set as a deadline to fix anything, per se, no more so than any other subsequent screening of projects in development are deadlines for anything other than the expected progress and attention to the notes delivered by management and colleagues."

Still, I must admit that I'm a little worried about the project. All I need to hear is the sentence "The plot and story is now ready, and actual production will start in July this year (or some other month not too far ahead)".

Oh! So should Jim Hill be ignored?! I sure hope so, for Rapunzel's sake. :)

When I was in college one of the professors claimed he was a close associate of Keane like 2 peas in a pod. This professor tried to direct a student film but couldn't do it and the project just died and the school pretends it's still in the works to this day to avoid a legal battle with the wuthor of the book it's based on and the state that gave them grants to make the film. Anyway, if this guy was really that much like Keane then maybe Keane can't direct either. There's nothing wrong with that. He is still a fantastic animator but maybe directing just isn't his thing and this could be why the film is delayed.

UncleEd, is it an April's Fool????

Nope. Not an April Fools joke. I don't play those. I will add that for this student project in question, we all got a semester of credit for doing a job on the production. I was brought on to adapt the book into a screenplay. I turned my screenplay in weeks before it was due but the "director" never read it. He had already set on having the girlfriend of one of his inner circle of students write the script. So they waited and waited and waited and like 6 weeks past the due date she turned in a SAMPLE and it was written like a novel because she was a writing major. She didn't understand that on film you can SHOW stuff rather than DESCRIBE it. So even though the professor who headed the department told the "director" he needed to read my screenplay, he opted not to and told the animation students that they didn't need a script because their animation should carry it all. I slammed the whole production at this point and was told the reason they had me write a screenplay was to prove they didn't need one. This guy had lost control before they even started and they never got past animating 1 shot by the semesters end.

The following semester one of the "director's" ex students was out of work so he had the university bring him on to finish the film. The first semester he reworked the entire section from the ground up and added a villain and all kinds of sexual humor. By the end of that semester all of that new work was scrapped. The following semester he started working on what had been left a year before but he got hired elsewhere and left mid semester. By that point the Disney guy who started out as the director was looking for a scapegoat to drop this project on so when it was known to be a failure they would blame this other person. Rather than fall for the trap, that faculty member just resigned quietly, which is what he wanted all along.

The three semesters I had classes under this Disney guy I was VERY unimpressed because only about 6-10 students were allotted any attention at all out of 200 and there were many times I waited for his office hours as the first one there and he would always take people in the order of his favorites so I never got in. He said many times that story isn't important and it's only about animation. When I graduated I was not even permitted to show my final film to the class. He said "I'm not going to waste the classes time with this" and it was a film I had worked on for 4 years. Plus he lost the first tape of it that I turned in a month early so I had to redo some of it. And by the way, as far as wasting class time, all we ever did each semester is watch the same people's films over and over and over for critiquing and it was only resulting in watering down original visions. There was one girl that the class would jerk around. She started out with a rodent trying to get a plum. She animated that and worked on it for months. Then someone said she should make it about a rodent and a camera. So she started over. Then when that was done they asked why a camera was in the woods and insisted she animate a jeep dropping it. So then she put it in a plane and did it in the luggage area. At the final showing the class said "This should be about a rodent and a plum". And I saw what was going on and I said something to the effect of "Why don't you leave her alone to do the story she wants how she wants it?" and I was rebuked by the class and even the girl herself. So I washed my hands of it by that point and the final insult came when I was refused to show my hard work in class after we watched the same films every class. I got up from my chair and said "Any janitor who works for Disney can say he was an exDisney employee" and I left. That professor (who never even had a degree) tried to flunk me but I successfully fought that. Anyway, it was no April Fool joke and if Glen Keane is really as close to this guy I had in school as he claimed Glen was, then I can see where Rapunzel's problems lie.

thank you very much for the explanations, UncleEd!!! I appreciate it!

I want to ask you a little question... (sorry, I'm italian and I don't speak very well english... I try to explain my question in the better way)

I would want to know, if you can say to me this: what is the new plotline about Rapunzel?
I know that the plot of the movie "Rapunzel" has been retooled in 2005 so I'd like to know if the new one will be a classical and traditional Disney fairy tale or just remain the story of a modern-day girl and boy who are transformed into Rapunzel and her gallant Prince?
Do you know something about the plot of the first act of this movie... I know that Lasseter said that Rapunzel has the most beautiful opening ever seen in a Disney movie...

I love too much Rapunzel fairy tale... if you can to know something about this movie, could you help me?

Many thanks by advance for the info!!!
