It sounds like he approached Disney to work on the film and not the other way around.
Miranda has also written songs for Mufasa: The Lion King, due to be released in December. The composer said he approached the project with “great trepidation” and given that the original film has “five songs, all bangers,” written by Elton John and Tim Rice, and has become a large part of the cultural zeitgeist. He was tapped to write six songs for the upcoming film, and said he wanted to join once he knew Barry Jenkins was directing the film. “That’s sort of like Greta Gerwig directing Barbie,” he said.

Dave Metzger, who scored Wish, is composing the score for the film. Lebo M. is the only original composer who is returning for the prequel. I wonder why the music team has undergone so many changes.

Disney has previously announced that Hans Zimmer, Nicholas Britell & Pharrell Williams were set to compose music for the film. Britell has reportedly starting working on his score, while Zimmer is believed to have dropped out of the project earlier before it went into production.

To be honest, Dave Metzger`s score for Wish was good. So I don`t mind him returning again for Mufasa. Despite how Mufasa and Wish aren`t comparable for their settings :P. But since Wish was a flop, it was remarkable how he got the job again, lol :P

Perhaps he got this job before Wish was released or there weren't any other top composers available at the moment to replace Zimmer. Anyway, I saw that Hans Zimmer is not returning to score Gladiator 2 either, so I searched for info on why and I found this. Apparently, he doesn't like to do sequels anymore. Especially, after The Lion King remake.
When Gladiator 2 was announced, I was really excited about the possibility of you returning to score the sequel. Why did you opt not to?

HANS ZIMMER: It’s really very simple. I’ve done that world. And I think I did it well. And all I’d do is set myself up for either trying to repeat myself, which I don’t want to do, or getting slaughtered by critics who say you didn’t do it as well as you did the first time. We have a gladiator fight in Dune: Part Two, right? We have a gladiator fight in Gladiator obviously, but they couldn’t be more different! I liked the idea of moving on and not getting compared to my own work. One way or the other I’d had enough of that, doing three Batman movies or four Pirates [of the Caribbean] movies or four Kung Fu Panda movies. And Gladiator takes a special place in my heart. I think it’s completely undisciplined. It wouldn’t have mattered if I had written the most amazing score, because the music in the first movie sticks in people’s hearts.

I had that experience doing the live[-action] version of The Lion King. I tried to step out of my own vocabulary. Every time I did, it just didn’t work. So all I could do was repeat myself. You owe it to yourself, and to the audience, to try to do new things. And I want to say something about [Gladiator 2 composer] Harry Gregson Williams, who started out as my assistant. He was very good friends with both Tony and Ridley Scott. Harry is family for me. He’s a phenomenal composer. That film is in really good hands. Trust me. Harry and I have spoken about it. He feels the old score barking at his heels a little bit. So he’s on his A game.

Thank you for the quote. What Hans Zimmer makes sense, another reason why he's one of my favorite composers

And the way he put it, the way new composers interpret the setting gets interesting too as long as they stay faithful to it.

Oh, you mean ... THIS trailer?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMXh6vjiZrI

Looks moderately interesting. I still can't get a read on the songs, but I think it's doing a better job at being more visually interesting than the 2019 dust bin while still looking cohesive to that film.

Anyways, 4th wall breaking Timon and Pumbaa at the beginning absolutely does not work with photorealistic critters. You made your choice, now commit to it!

Well, to give my thoughts about the new trailers, I do like them both. The animation of Kiros and Zazu looks less naturalistic and uncanny compared to the animation of the other characters. Otherwise, how they`re both beginning with I Just Can`t Wait to Be King and Hakuna Matata feels a little tacky, especially with the second trailer. But both trailers gives the feeling of Deja Vu with the previous remakes of The Lion King and The Jungle Book (especially with the flood and the beehive).

New character posters from Vietnam: https://www.facebook.com/TheLionGuardDi ... t3qHrDtETl

Footage from the musical number shown at D23 whose audio leaked back then: https://x.com/MufasaUpdate/status/1858031379717472426

And videos of the Japanese voice actors performing that same song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCjVuVrJbe8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kNJjXnlUMS0

The Japanese poster is my favorite so far, along with the teaser ones, which had a similar concept. And it's interesting that Barry Jenkings wanted Mufasa to have humble origins because he has too and identifies with these kinds of characters.

If Kiros has two songs, he must have a considerable amount of screen time. It sounds like he'll be like a role model for Taka/Scar, while Mufasa will probably learn from him what not to do as king.

It's true, the flood reminds of the stampede in the first film; I hadn't realized that. The Chinese trailer shows there's even a dolly zoom effect during that sequence in a shot featuring Mufasa, which is very similar to the famous one from the animated film when Simba sees the stampede for the first time. Probably, Mufasa's parents die in that sequence too. A former synopsis for the movie novelization I just discovered seems to indicate so. The word "Milele" is also mentioned in that synopsis. It says there it's "a rumored paradise for creatures of all kinds." That's also the title of Anika Noni Rose's song in the film. She voices Mufasa's biological mother, so that means she'll be the one who tells him about that mythical place.

Mufasa: The Lion King | Visionary Storyteller
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZaaw3tRbxM

I'd be interested to see this do well simply because it'd be fascinating for Disney to try deliberately courting more artful directors and giving them free reign to leave their mark on the Disney canon.

I know once upon a time the vision for these live-action reimaginings had been to just do a series of full-on origin stories in the vein of Maleficent (the Tinker Bell movie, the Genie movie, etc.) rather than readaptations like most of what we've been getting. Now that all their heavy-hitters have been remade, it looks like they're auditioning more of the former type of story, and I'm wondering how I'd have felt if that had been their vision all along. As far as The Lion King goes, I would have been very happy to have just skipped the 2019 film's link in the chain and jump straight to this.
