Hurricanes 2024
Just checking in and making sure everyone affected is doing okay?
Thankfully, where I live and work has been minimally impacted but neighboring counties have experienced catastrophic flooding.

Re: Hurricane Helene
I'm on the east coast of FL, so luckily it wasn't bad here. So many towns are heavily damaged on the western part of the state - it's heartbreaking to see the pictures and read their stories. I have a friend out there whose family business got flooded. I'm hoping it won't be too much work to reopen, but their streets are totally flooded.

Re: Hurricane Helene
I’m so glad you are safe!
The devastation where I live is just almost incomprehensible. Like I said, where I immediately live was spared the worse, but yesterday I was talking to a coworker who still didn’t have electricity or water, who will have to drive a different route to school because two of the bridges she used to drive across got swept away. I have another coworker who’s on a business trip that flew out of Asheville… and now their car is basically stranded in Asheville because Asheville is an island now because of the flooding and damage. Somebody I knew from college had their house swept away and all their belongings. Just talk about devastating. The worst thing is seeing on Facebook, people searching for family members. My sister has a missing coworker. I’m blessed that all the people in my life are safe and accounted for. Our community has just never faced anything like this, I think we are shell shocked.
I will say, our community has really come through and banded together to help one another. That is a silver lining.

*hug*. I'm happy you and your loved ones are safe. That's incredibly sad, missing people, having your house be swept away. I can't even imagine.

Re: Hurricane Helene
I didn't know this storm caused this terrible devastation! Stranded on an island, bridges gone, houses and belongings gone, missing people! I am so glad you and your friends and family are safe, Brelly and Amy!

Thanks, Duster. Yes, I don’t think the media has done a very good job of showing the damage. It’s been absolutely devastating.

Re: Hurricanes 2024
Just wanted to say I am thinking about everyone affected by Hurricane Milton. I know there are a lot of UD posters past and present who live in that part of FL, hoping you all stay safe. <3

Besides the power and Internet flickering this morning, I haven't lost power. My dog is still sleeping so I haven't been outside yet this morning. No flooding inside the apartment; I've been told that this complex doesn't flood during the storms, so that's good. I hope everyone is keeping safe.

Re: Hurricanes 2024
Who else do we have that lives in Florida?
I think that this morning CNN reported that hurricane has weakened to category 2. I hope that maybe it doesn't cause as much devastation as foreseen.
Amy and UF, do you live far away from each other?

Yes, we live far away. Amy lives in FL and I live all the way in East TN, in the Appalachian mountains. Here’s a picture of where I am in relation to the rest of the US (I live in the red space).
So you can kinda see, we are typically not a community that has to deal with the impact of hurricanes… there have actually been a lot of assholes criticizing us for being unprepared for Helene, but this was unprecedented in living memory. Our people are still in shock. Milton isn’t going to affect us, thank goodness, because our towns cannot handle more flooding. We are not built for hurricane weather.
I am not sure who else lives in FL, I think a lot of older posters did, but don’t want to say for sure as some of them may have moved. Hoping everyone made through it safely.

There was quote a lot of flooding and tornado warnings where I live during that last hurricane, but thankfully nothing serious happened. Unfortunately, not all of NC was that lucky.
Listening to most often lately:
Wicked (2024) ~ "The Wizard and I"
Wicked (2024) ~ "Popular"
Kesha ~ "Rainbow"
