It's interesting that Rotten Tomatoes (I know we can't always go by what reviewers say) shows 84% audience, 37% critics. Luke gave it 3.5 stars...I sadly agree with what he was getting at at the end of the review, that unfortunately a rare original Disney live-action film is doing poorly...so Disney might think we only want remakes, when maybe just this film was off. It's such a shame.
Oh, I think it’s worth seeing, and the audience score here definitely justifies it’s overall quality more than the critics, even if it is still a bit high.

It’s actually pretty good :-) I actually liked it better than both Barbie and Oppenheimer :-) especially if you’re a fan of the parks, it does the ride justice and has a lot of little things that I quite enjoyed about it, quite a lot of the other people seem to quite enjoy it as well, even love it :-)

Justin Simien Says ‘Haunted Mansion’ July Release Date Was ‘Really Tough’: ‘I Saw ‘Barbie’ Coming From Miles Away’
https://www.thewrap.com/haunted-mansion ... er-strike/
“There was a lot of stuff going on with the strike…a lot of stuff that had nothing to do with the movie that I think really got in the way, and that was frustrating to see because I came up in publicity. If you had asked me and sat down with me…I would have seen some of these things coming. I’ll put it that way,” Simien explained.

“There’s a lot of folks in the industry that just kept saying, ‘I don’t know’ and ‘That’ll probably not be as big as it sounds like.’ And I was like, ‘It’s going to be huge,’” Simien said of “Barbie.” “What ‘Oppenheimer’ did so well — the marketing for ‘Oppenheimer’ embraced the fact that ‘Barbie’ was coming with this gigantic, cultural juggernaut. I don’t know that our campaign necessarily embraced or acknowledged that we were essentially coming out in the shadow of what was clearly such a box office phenomenon.”

"It's Usually Been The Other Way Around": Haunted Mansion Director Candidly Reflects On Disney Movie's Negative Reviews
https://screenrant.com/haunted-mansion- ... se-candid/
It's a bummer, to be honest. It's a bummer to feel like people don't get something that you're doing, and that you've worked so hard on, but ultimately, it's usually been the other way around. [Laughs] Especially with Dear White People coming out of Sundance, where critics loved Dear White People, and audiences eventually loved it. But at first, it was incredibly divisive, and it was incredibly polarizing. So, with this film, it was interesting, I went into it wanting to make a crowd pleaser, and kind of wanting to prove to myself that I could, that I knew how to bring an audience through a story. So, I'm glad that that part of it came to fruition, I'm glad I was able to accomplish that. I don't typically read my own reviews, I learned that lesson a while ago, especially when they're good. But on this one, I read a couple of them, and it felt like, I don't know, I wasn't quite sure what movie they were talking about all the time. It felt like there were some other things going on in those reviews, I gotta say, than just what was happening in the movie, and that kind of thing is just out of your control, you know? I think, if anything, it was actually a really great lesson as a filmmaker, in terms of who you make your movies for, and why you make them, and what your own marker for success is. To me, I'd rather have the audience go on the journey I want them to go on than anything. So, I don't know, the rest is just kind of take it as you get it.
Sharing because, while I personally didn't connect with the film, I do think these kinds of comments from the filmmakers are interesting.

Saw the movie today. I didn't go to the theater when it was released.
It is a movie that you are going to appreciate if you know the ride. The movie by itself it's bad, the script is not as good as it should and I have the feeling that they mixed different ideas trying them to fix between them but they failed. The story is very simple and it could be told in less than two hours. I think that they couldn't find the good term between a scary movie and a comedy. I get the point that the ride is not a scary ride and that it has some funny parts but in the movie they coulnd't achieve this essence that the ride has. When they try to make it it looks weird and out of place maybe because they tried to make funny characters like are not funny at all like the bride.
The only thing that I liked is the soundtrack, the easter eggs and Danny DeVito and Tiffany. The mansion by itself is amazing, I have not been in Aneheim Disneyland but I've been at Orlando's one and I enjoyed very much recognizing all the details that they recreated for the movie.
As I said if you like the ride then you can find something attractive on the movie but if not I've would recomend you another movie.

I really enjoyed this movie. I should give it a re-watch. Maybe I'll even buy it to watch every Halloween. I think it is a feel-good movie with some good scares along the way.

Came across this from director Justin Simien and figured I'd post here.
Now that you have had some time and distance from Haunted Mansion, how do you feel about that whole experience? You’ve talked about how things changed and what you learn from test screenings, and you’ve also said that there’s probably a four-hour version because of everything you shot that didn’t make it. When you look at it now, how do you feel about how it turned out?

SIMIEN: I have some mixed feelings about it, to be honest. I’m really proud of myself, as a person, in that process. It was extremely difficult, and when the release came, there was just a lot of conversation that was difficult to be in the middle of, especially during the actors strike and all of those things. At the end of the day, I have to say, I’m really proud of the audience scores of that movie. I read some of the reviews, and that wasn’t very good for my soul, so that took me a second. But I’m proud of what I could control in that process. The audience scores on that movie were one thing that I knew I had control over. We would have these test screenings, and I was able to vocalize what people were reacting to and nudge the production towards those directions. And to see that people were really loving it, on that level, when it came out, felt like a win to me. But the whole thing was kind of a bummer. We came out of the shadow of Barbie, of course. And then, there were people questioning whether or not it was appropriate for me to be promoting the film. That stuff was hard. It was. I’m not gonna lie. But it didn’t kill me. I’m glad to have had the experience and to take everything I learned into the next thing.

It’s always such a weird thing to try to judge the success of anything. There are great movies that people never see, and there are movies that make a ton of money that are horrible. So, how do you find your own personal satisfaction and success in something?

SIMIEN: This probably comes with age. I’m 41 now, and inside of me, there’s gotta be a conversation between my own personal metric for success and what society or culture deems a success because that has something to do with my career and the jobs that I get. It has to a conversation between both of those things for me. With Haunted, of the things that were in my control, and there weren’t a ton of things, I’m really proud about how those things turned out. I am. Whatever people might say about the film, even folks who really enjoyed it and were entertained by it, I’m so proud that there is a movie out there where there’s a relationship between a Black man who is struggling to feel his feelings. The movie hinges on him being able to feel his feelings and connect with a kid that doesn’t have a dad, that needs somebody to take care of him and look after him. That might seem very small, but that’s not a narrative that is common out there, and that speaks to my heart and my soul and the things I need from stories. If nothing else, that’s pretty cool. And also, I know that I can do that. I’m in no way, shape, or form intimidated by a budget that size and a production schedule that long. There are other things that I did learn that I probably won’t do again, but in terms of doing a big studio movie, it hasn’t quite spoiled my thoughts on it just yet.
