when I think of HSM I'm reminded of a line from Spaceballs: Merchandising! Merchandising!
HSM the lunch box
HSM the breakfast cereal
HSM the coloring book
HSM the flame thrower!
Yeah - I forgot about the pep rally! I'm sure we'll see a direct to video soon as well!
Seriously though, it's great that they had a hit movie, but to be honest, the only reason I liked that movie was because of Ms. Darbus, the drama teacher - she was so funny!
It's not only community theatres and schools that have licensed HSM for stage productions. Some professional theatres are performing it as well, such as The North Shore Music Theatre in Massachusetts. This professional production, along with some others around the country I believe, were arranged well before Disney announced a national theatre tour. I think they realized that if these other theatres could be successful with professional productions, then Disney themselves should get in on the act instead of continuing to simply license HSM out to others.
I'm not surprised at all. HSM is really popular right now on social media. People who grew up with these movies now feel nostalgia about it.
Primark and Bershka made collections of T-shirts, Piyamas... they are going to still earning lot of money with this.
