It's supposed to have music by Alan Menken and they decide to put a Journey song instead

Netflix don't know how to market.

The movie itself looks like a Modern Disney knock off.

Her little purple sidekick made me smile. They went hard with the John Lasseter promotion in the beginning of the trailer, huh?

I don't have Netflix so probably won't be seeing it...even after watching the trailer I'm kind of meh on it. I didn't love the YouTube comment that came up saying "Why does this look better than Wish?"

I am no fan of Wish, but I disagree this looks better.

It looks just like the next homogenised, boring, mainstream animated feature with cringe dialogue and an awkward female lead ripped off straight from WDAS' recent successes. And it seems the movie expects me to get excited to see how far this girl will "go for family."

I am surprised the trailer didn't also remind us of the sacrosanct importance of "following our hearts" and "being ourselves."

Hopefully, this is just a case of a bad trailer, and the movie itself is actually excellent. (It'd better be. Alan Menken's music deserves a worthy movie.)

Here are also photos of a leaflet handed out at Annecy and a crew T-shirt.

The cardboard cutout standee below, from the film's wrap party, gives us a better look at Ellian's dress. It reminds me of those dresses with very wide skirts from the 18th century or so. I've looked it up and, apparently, they're called panniers and originated in Spain in the 17th century. Like it happened with Wish, the art direction of this film is partly inspired by Spanish culture, so it would make sense if that was the inspiration for the dress.

By the way, the carriage featured in the trailer and in one of the playsets looks like a clear homage or reference to Disney's Cinderella, doesn't it? I'm a bit surprised by it since this is not a Disney production.

That actually looks pretty good. I wonder if that pop song is by Alan Menken, if it's just a random pop song or if it's the end credits song...

According to someone in the comments, the song featured in the trailer is "Family" by the Chainsmokers & Kygo, so it's not by Menken. I don't know if there'll still be a final trailer and they're waiting to preview some of the film's songs there, but Netflix tends to promote the songs. I think they'll release clips and lyric videos closer to the release date.

So weird. With Tangled and now this: "Alan Menken wrote amazing music, but let's promote with random pop songs instead!". So puzzling.

They're finally starting to promote the music. First, with this promo where they acknowledge fans are asking for the songs and then releasing a full song from the movie:

Rachel Zegler Sings "The Way It Was Before" In the Booth
"The Way It Was Before" Lyric Video

EDIT: The end credit version of the song, performed by Lauren Spencer Smith, has also been released. And here's an interview with Alan Menken and Glenn Slater.

Netflix made a mistake releasing this film today. With all the big films coming out (Gladiator II, Wicked, Moana 2), this film is overlooked. They should have released it a month ago.
