Donald Duck in D.I.Y. Duck

Post by Sotiris »

In the press release for the content coming to Disney+ in June 2024, there's a mention of a short called "DIY Duck" as part of the celebration for Donald Duck's birthday. Could this be a new 2D short?

• Crazy Over Daisy
• Out on a Limb

We also have a new clip from DIY Duck, complete with a piece of music from “Lady and the Tramp” you can quickly listen for, which is the musical piece heard where Baby Lady tries to walk up the stairs of her owner’s house to try and sleep with them: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/RvYc6X ... tid=WC7FNe.

Got some more information and new pics of the short: https://www.animationmagazine.net/2024/ ... ted-short/.

Also, people who saw the short at The Walt Disney Studios lot say the short’s run time is about 3 minutes long: https://x.com/themeparkdirk/status/1799 ... 05322?s=46.

The animation looks fine, but I wonder why the backgrounds look so flat and textureless?

How about that? And apparently Mark Henn handled this one. Last thing he did before his retirement. Not sure how I feel, for I'm kinda neutral on Donald Duck shorts, but hey, nice to see new 2D stuff from Disney.

Augh, 3 minutes long? That's TOO short. Needs to be three times that length.

Maybe to call back to how shorts were made at Disney in the 50's?

Least it won't be a minute long like each of Eric Goldberg's Goofy How To Stay At Home shorts.

Unless he also did indeed coach WDAS Vancouver's team on getting the hand-drawn animated look of the Tiana series right before he retired, too.

Who knows what's going to happen with that. I don't even know if that's really true or not (and I regret relaying that information from sources I don't even know exist anymore; I never meant to spread misinformation.)

Well, if only you could remember where you heard that info.

Oh well. Guess we’ll know more about Tiana at D23.

If what people like Skyler Shuler and a friend I follow on Twitter/X, Emily Kranking, heard is true, it seems Moana 2 being a global smash at the box office is our best and last remaining chance to make Tiana get the money and resources needed to give it the fully assured 2-D/hand-drawn animated treatment, especially if they plan to turn it into The Princess and the Frog 2 for the big screen, though they may have to release it in November 2026 to give Frozen 3 more time to better develop.

Well, hey, Pixar's For The Birds is 3 minutes long and that is arguably one of their best shorts ever.

Agreed that the animation looks good, but on closer inspection, something seems odd.

I have a sneaking suspicion they may be using Meander for some of the inbetweens. Some parts of the animation look 'artificially perfect.'

Then again, maybe I'm hallucinating. 😅

Those backgrounds are hideous.

It was so barebones I have no idea who this is even for.

I wouldn't call them hideous, but certainly unremarkable.

I liked the animation, and now I think my earlier suspicion of automated inbetweening is unfounded. If the young interns are responsible for a good chunk of the short's animation, then I'd say they are very talented and I look forward to their future efforts.

I was far more perturbed by the patchwork-quilt musical score. There is NO excuse for the lack of original score. Editing together disparate musical cues from multiple 1940s/1950s Donald Duck cartoons to save a few bucks is laughable for a behemoth like the Walt Disney Corp. It makes the finished film sound like some fan edit of a Disney cartoon uploaded to 2008-era YouTube.

In the end, it remains obvious that the short was produced on a micro-budget. Is this the best we are to expect for such major milestones?

That was largely forgettable, Its cool in a "hand drawn animation in 2024" sense, but thats about all it was for me. Maybe if it had other characters involved?

But yea, it felt like a quick project for Mark Hann to work on cheaply as he was headed out the door.
