Re: Moana
It seems to be one of those films that have been "discovered" more over time via streaming. It's why I said in the National Film Registry thread that I can see Moana holding the same weight with the public twenty years from now as, say, Mulan and Pocahontas do now. Not peak films, but titles / names that are immediately recognized at least. I can definitely see Rapunzel, Frozen, and Moana all getting live-action "remakes" down the line.
While I wish I liked the film more on a personal level, I'm glad M&C's film was another hit on their record.

Listening to most often lately:
Wicked (2024) ~ "The Wizard and I"
Wicked (2024) ~ "Popular"
Kesha ~ "Rainbow"

I'm happy for them too, even though I feel it's their most Pixar-ian film and the least representative of their sensibilities as filmmakers.Disney's Divinity wrote:While I wish I liked the film more on a personal level, I'm glad M&C's film was another hit on their record.

Glad a POC film is being recognized for true representation and not that toad princess junk.
Re: Moana
Moana approval box! on display at the studio. The box and staff were used during dailies. When the directors (John Musker, Ron Clements) approved a shot, they would hit the staff to the box. got pretty smashed to pieces towards the end.

I'm not a specialist in choreography and, moreover, in Huwai'ian dances, but the dance of the little boy is unforgetable. Was it hula?blackcauldron85 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 4:24 pm Polynesians Criticize Moana’s ‘Hula’ Choreography in ‘Magic Happens’ Parade at Disneyland

James Lopez posted a hand drawn test of a character from an earlier version of Moana named Pele.

It was designed to be an effects process test to transition from CG to 2D animation.
I roughed out the effects at the beginning to suggest how "Pele" might rise from the sea as a lava tube.

What a great find. Thanks for posting! It looks like this was an earlier version of the Te Ka/Te Fiti character. I love the visual references to the Spring Sprite from Fantasia 2000 and Kida from Atlantis.

Re: Moana
I know, right? I have only watched the movie two times. I think it's fun, I do like the soundtrack, and the characters, but Moana herself is a bit boring. She doesn't have that timeless quality. Meanwhile, Maui is awesome, it's just the Rock being the Rock.thedisneyspirit wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 8:01 pm I just saw this again after a while and I forgot how mediocre this movie is. Moana is the biggest Mary Sue ever. There's not one interesting thing about her and the only people who like her are the people who hate the princesses (while ignoring quality characters like Esmeralda and Meg for not being official) or feel the need to act super woke. Tired of seeing people praise her for doing what every princess already did before her. And the fact that a hack like LMM got credit when he is the biggest pariah in Latin America makes it 10x worse.
Only consolation is Maui. He is such a husbando.

What Moana would have been
Imagine in an alternative timeline where Moana gets its concept ideas changed as they replace Maui with a cute magical sea angel and make Pua and Hei Hei talk due to Sea Angel's magic for its final and released version?

Jesus Christ! Just because you don’t like Wish does not mean that you can just go around and making immature posts like this! You’re actually drawing a lot more attention to it, and worse setting a bad example in every kind of way for other people not only and how to react this kind of thing, but also how do you think in general. What’s your problem?
Please grow up and get a life, or better yet do The alternative that you can do with it, as it would really Contribute and sustain/feel a lot more to the world

Exactly, which is why what I said still applies. Joke or not, this is a very disrespectful and immature way of expressing and dealing with this not only for yourself but for others. You don’t realize the impact this kind of thing has, no matter what no matter how otherwise it may seem

Re: Moana
Patricier, you need to chill and stop going off every time someone criticizes Wish (or anything else you like, for that matter). You had no right to chastise DEEcat. Their comment was perfectly fine whereas your response was over-the-top and inappropriate.

Re: Moana
With all due respect, You as well as others for that matter, seriously need to re-evaluate what is truly considered “fine” or “inappropriate”, as this comment is in very disrespectful let alone bullying taste that regardless of whether someone involved likes or doesn’t like it or not, is still very inappropriate and unethical.
Again, this kind of thing only leads to more and more of this kind of thing or worse, of what you can use my own reaction as an example, of which I would not be doing if it weren’t for this kind of thing, and at the very least you have to admit is at least in defense, instead of outright attacking like this original comment is. Not only is it generally inappropriate and over-the-top, but it’s also clearly how the original commentor wants to be treated, as that’s the vibe that they are spreading, and they are deliberately going out of their way to attack something and also affect something else at the same time for no real reason, or rather a reason that should not be this kind of an issue in the first place.
