Wow, what a cast list! It's almost a shame we can't bring Hanks from the Disney take and add him to those names, too. I've never read the source material for Pinocchio: I didn't know there was a female character other than the Blue Fairy in that story... I'm assuming Blanchett will play the Blue Fairy, so... Perhaps Tilda Swinton will be playing a genderbent villain or something? I could see her playing the Coachman's role, for example.

I just feel that the rise of fascism is unnecessary addition to a story that already has dark and complicated themes, and the original story took place a long time before that.

Guillermo del Toro's movies often center on mixing fantasy with the destructive side of humankind. This is especially evident in Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Del Toro himself has said he dislikes authoritarianism and any person or organization that forces people to follow a rigid structure.

Knowing that, it's understandable why he would add fascism to the story.

I believe the fascism angle of this was known going back to when it was announced. It’s part of the reason I’m less annoyed by two versions of the story being made at the same time. This will likely be better than the Disney re-make even without Hanks, but I’d have hazarded that guess just based on Del Toro being attached.

I think it adds an interesting element to a very familiar and often-adapted story. Hopefully it will be more complimentary to the story's themes than distracting.

I hope this adaptation finally does justice to the darker aspects of the original by keeping things like Pinocchio killing the Cricket or the Fox and the Cat hanging Pinocchio on a tree and leaving him for dead.

It's Sebastian Cricket (not Jiminy- unless that's a nickname)- interesting. Very excited to see more of this. Disney's version is perfect so I'm more interested in the look and tone I suppose of this (I'm just weird about different film versions of stories besides the Disney animated versions!)...

They couldn't use Jiminy Cricket; that's copyrighted by Disney. In the original tale, he was only referred to as Cricket. It was Disney that gave him a name.

Sebastian Cricket. I know it's unrelated to the Disney character, but it's cute since I always thought Sebastian functioned similarly to Jiminy Cricket, constantly chasing after Ariel to get her to do the right thing and disapproving of everything she does, lol.
