They will not start from scratch:

https://www.businessinsider.com/how-nim ... ?r=US&IR=T
A person with knowledge of the production told Insider that Netflix and Annapurna didn't start from scratch. Much of what Blue Sky started remains intact, and members of the Blue Sky creative team have stayed on the project.

"It's a big sigh of relief," the former Blue Sky staffer said, referring to Netflix's announcement. "It's something that we all worked so hard on together. It was a labor of love."

Good for them! I almost wonder if this has something to do with Disney's recent controversy, and they're trying to get back on the good side by correcting on something like this.

Idk, I think it looks interesting. I like the visual style--that's Paperman-esque (or adjacent) like Wish and Spider-verse, right?

Story-wise, it looks like one that's hard to predict if it'll be good or bad, maybe when we see more.

I didn't care for this movie, it's another "Gen Z" movie with a lot of Tumblr/Twitter humor, they tried so hard to make Nimona cool that she just comes across as lame and annoying. The animation looked cheap and it's becoming increasingly difficult to be invested in a world that tries to be both modern and old fashioned.

Finally saw this movie. It's not a perfect movie but so interesting and I think worth a watch.

This movie isn't preachy in my opinion, it's genuine and human.

Yes, some characters say stuff like "bro" and "metal" which is a bit too Tumblr-esque. I didn't like one of the jock knights and, spoilers, but there's a twist villain of sorts that was really boring and only "following tradition". Not fun.

And some of the music is too into your face "punky". (I prefer the times the movie does orchestral work.)

But I think Nimona herself is relatable. She's acts like a rebel but it's presented as a front for how people expect her to behave. (A la Wreck it Ralph or Megamind - people expect a bad guy, that's what they get.) She thought that she was not worthy of being herself - the climax really broke my heart when Nimona almost killed herself on the Gloreth statue.

Ballister comes to realize the world he grew up in might be a lie. That centuries of society was built on an wrongly told fairy tale story.

The boyfriend (Ambrosious) having to be at war between duty and heart, it's subtle but I appreciate how they do show that he's conflicted with what the kingdom wants and what he wants.

I remember reading on YouTube that this movie did the "modern fantasy" better than Onward did. And I do feel similar. In Nimona the society is both so advanced but old fashioned (knights with high-tech swords.) And all throughout history magical beings like Nimona herself are branded the enemy. It's like, the kingdom advanced in order to fight magic; magic never was integrated nor accepted as good.

Oh, I forgot this was streaming-only. And out already! :o I might try to watch it tomorrow then, if I get the chance. I am very curious about it, not sure how I'll feel about it exactly.

I’m happy that Netflix got the movie and finished it themselves because this movie is so good! I wasn’t expecting that much and the only thing I know is that it was based off on a webcomic, but when I sat down and watched it, I was sold till the very end.

The first act was kinda fast paced and I was still getting used to the character and set design from what I seen from the trailers, but when the second act happened, the movie started to slow down and properly show it’s story beats in a much better way since it’s now allowed to breathe. The comedy was also good.

I love Nimona and how she’s animated. She’s so expressive and kinda cartoony but she also serves as an allegory for how transgender and non-binary people are treated in society. How they use shapeshifting as that is very smart, especially since the author of the webcomics is also trans. I also like Ballister and Ambrosius’ relationship in the movie, felt very genuine and how it played out throughout the movie felt like a medival romantic drama. I actually didn’t expect that the Director would be the twist villain and tbh, she’s very realistic, using the media in the kingdom to keep the people away from the truth is one example. I liked how Ballister was uneasy about Nimona’s shapeshifting and wanted her to just be a girl, similar to how people woud rather want trans or genderfluid people to be as they are. You can be gay and still be transphobic and vice versa. I also liked the twist that the kingdom’s history is a lie and the truth is that it was formed from a little girl hating her own best friend because society at that time told her she’s a monster.

There were some bad parts in the movie like Thod (Nimona’s right, he’s extremely punchable) but that didn’t deter me from enjoying it. It’s up there with Across the Spider-Verse as the best animated movie of 2023 for me.
