Doesn't this mean that people in Florida are going to pay more taxes? Why would they approve this?

DeSantis says FL residents will not take on the tax burden, but Disney says FL has to pay their debts if this goes through.

I don't think Disney particularly cares if the bill passes or not given they will be keeping most of their perks either way.

So Disney will still be charging itself its own taxes, as long as they don't disagree with the governor?! I think the next time Florida does something controversial, government-wise (which, in my opinion, happens a lot these days), some cast members may be outspoken like they were regarding the "Don't Say Gay" bill. But I'm sure overall Disney cares more about the taxes/Reedy Creek than a few outspoken cast members...

Let's hope that doesn't happen, especially after Biden's speech last night.

You mean "if" he becomes president. And the answer is: nothing.

Let's hope "if" doesn't become "when."

DeSantis 2024!
Make America Florida!
My boyfriend and I are moving to FL from NJ as soon as possible!

Flame 🔥 away, folks!

I’m so fond of most of you, but there is a diversity of opinion here when it comes to politics, as it should be, imo.

No thanks. I refuse to let America become as fascist-wannabe as Florida is.

I don't think this forum is the place to dissolve the conversation into quick responses about politics.

It's more suited for the Off-Topic board.

I also think it deserves more conversation than this. So many people just resort to quick sound bites of information, instead of actually doing research into the topic they're "talking" about. It's what's wrong with the current state of politics in my opinion.

Very wise and understanding advice, singerguy, which, coming from you, doesn’t surprise me.

My point was just that the political opinions on this board are not monolithic.
A little tolerance for others’ viewpoints is appreciated.

Thank you!

I know I'm a little bit the elephant in the room when you were referring to different opinions, but I do genuinely enjoy hearing everyone's point of view. I don't think you can fully understand your own standpoint without hearing out your oppositions. Otherwise you don't really stand for anything.

I think as a country the difference in opinion is what makes us stronger as a whole anyway. Diversity is what makes us stronger and stand apart from other countries. But now, I'm just driving this subject even more off it's rails so I'll stop with that here lol.

You’re a real sweetheart! 😘

Actually I don’t know anything about your opinions (or anybody’s else’s for that matter) except when these “controversial” topics spring up on occasion. I do know as a gay conservative I’m often attacked just for stating my opinion. As best as I can recall, I’ve never attacked in a bullying fashion another’s viewport. I have said I don’t agree but it’s never gotten personal on my part as far as I recall. And if I have hurt someone’s feelings, I sincerely apologize.
I come here because of my love for Disney (except for its recent direction). Thank you, singerguy, for your kindness.

And now, you’re so right, let’s return to our regular programming....

Nothing. These culture war talking points are just to pit Americans against each other and make sure they keep watching FOX News and MSNBC so they can continue to rake in sweet sweet advertising money.

It’s called the outrage industrial complex. People on both sides of the aisle are busy arguing over bathrooms and M&M’s and that’s become a business model for corporate America.

A nice way to keep everyone distracted from the fact that basic things like transportation and healthcare are on par with most of the third world.

DeSantis is a monster of course, leaving his taxpayers to pay the bill for homophobic antics he's using to elevate himself with says that well enough, but nothing's going to happen to Disney long-term whatever happens in regards to him.

Florida won't be able to do anything about the taxes thing, regardless of Disney's political positions, but there will be other points of pressure they can push if the bill passes.
The district is set up to oversee such things as land use and infrastructure within its boundaries. Under current law, board members are selected by landowners within the district, meaning that Disney has control over who sits on the body. If the bill passes, board members would be appointed by the governor and confirmed by the Senate. The bill also would strip the district of a number of other powers. That includes its ability to own and operate airport facilities, stadiums and arenas, “novel and experimental” transportation facilities and a nuclear fission power plant. It also remove authority over certain roads and highways. The district also would no longer be exempted from state land use regulation, building and safety codes and zoning rules. The board also would be required to submit, every five years, reports to the governor and state elected leaders that reviews the remaining powers of the district.
