The Nightmare Before Christmas 20th anniversary

Post by HarryCanyon »

Happy 20th birthday to one of the coolest animated movies ever.

Even though this is technically a Disney movie but made from a separate Disney owned studio as Disney was originally gonna do it but they fear it would be too dark for their image and would suffer another Black Cauldron but gave it to Touchstone. It became an instant hit for Touchstone and became a classic, it was so popular over the years that in 2007 Disney got back the rights.

I remembered when i was 12 when it first came out and dug the hell out of it as i saw it 4 times in theaters and became one of my fave animated movies.

The blu-ray that was released in 2009 was one of my first BD purchases and WOW the restoration is flawless no doubt including the remastered sound. That at the same time when i went to Disneyland i saw the Nightmare Before Christmas version of Haunted Mansion and that was cool too and loved the levels based on TNBC in the Kingdom Hearts franchise as well.

I suppose Iglehart will be performing "Oogie Boogie's Song"?

EDIT: He performed the song on The View this morning. I thought he was pretty good.

Because they used real film, animators couldn’t see their dailies until the next day. If anything went wrong, they had to start over on that scene.
Ugh, that stinks.
The warehouse they filmed in wasn’t temperature controlled and on hot days, pieces of the set would start to melt. If the animators didn’t notice it in time, it would make elements of the set wiggle on film and it would blow the shot.
That also stinks.
The crew produced handmade opening credits that were never used where all of the letters were spelled out using pieces of candy corn.
But why didn't they use it?!

I could see a re-make in the same vein as TLK 2019 happening... You know, now I think of it, I'm really shocked a Broadway musical of this film hasn't happened already. I know it's holiday-themed (which would make it odd in the spring time), but it's such a beloved property.

In a new interview, Henry Selick expressed his disappointment that the public still believes Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Q: You have such a strong voice in your animated work, and yet so much of the credit goes to other people. There are people who think that Tim Burton directed The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Henry Selick: Yeah, I’ve won many a bar bet.

Q: Is there an impulse for you to defer to that, or do you feel the collaboration necessitates it in some way?

Henry Selick: No, that was a little unfair because it wasn’t called Tim Burton’s Nightmare until three weeks before the film came out. And I would have been fine with that, if that’s what I signed up for. But Tim was in L.A. making two features while I directed that film, and I mean, Tim is a genius—or he certainly was in his most creative years. I always thought his story was perfect, and he designed the main characters. But it was really me and my team of people who brought that to life. Now, of course, if you ask Danny Elfman, well, that’s his movie [Laughs]. When we finished the film, it was so funny because he came up to me and shook my hand. “Henry, you’ve done a wonderful job illustrating my songs!” And he was serious, and I loved it! Fine. But my thing was I’m going to hang in there long enough to where people actually say, “Oh, that guy Henry, he does stuff.”

I don't know if anyone here would know right off--I looked at Luke's reviews first, but I could only find one for the Collector's Edition DVD--but does the 20th Anniversary Blu-ray differ much at all from the Collector's Edition DVD as far as bonus features go? I guess what I'm asking is does the 20th Anniversary Blu-ray have more features than the latter or were the same ones merely transferred over?

Thank you! I have two other editions of the film already, so it was really about bonus features for me since these two editions are both available on DisneyMovieInsiders for a low amount. Just redeemed the Collector's Edition! :)

You're welcome! Seems like it's the better option since it listed a couple bonuses that the other didn't list!
