Little Shop of Horrors (Remake)

Post by Sotiris »

Warner Bros is developing a remake of the Little Shop of Horrors musical, with Greg Berlanti directing, Marc Platt producing and Matthew Robinson writing the script. It's not yet known whether Menken will be involved or whether there will be new songs.

Billy Porter talks about the remake.
Porter is also set to voice Audrey II, the talking man-eating plant in director Greg Berlanti’s big-screen remake of “Little Shop of Horrors.” Porter couldn’t officially confirm that Scarlett Johansson has signed on to star as Audrey or that Chris Evans is set to play her abusive dentist boyfriend, but we did ask why he thinks the two would be right for those parts. “She’s a fantastic actress and her energy is right,” he said of Johansson. “You need that kind of strong but vulnerable. It’s the dichotomy of that.” As for Evans, he said, “He’ll be hot, which is sort of what it needs to be. You need to understand why she stays in that abusive relationship.”

Here’s what he told me when asked how he’s approaching the part: “This was one of the musicals that is from my generation, from the 80s, so I’ve known it, the songs have been my audition songs for years. And I was also in the out-of-town revival tryout before it went to Broadway back in 2002, and I got let go from that so I’ve already played the voice of the plant. And I just approached it from the standpoint of what it truly is; it’s kind of like the Faustian story. It’s kind of like the devil story. Like, ‘Sell your soul to me and I’ll give you everything you want.’ He’s a villain! And I don’t get to play villains very often, so get ready because he’s gonna be everything. All of the things! I’m gonna use all of the different ranges of the voice!”

Chris Evans would be great. I suppose Johansson would do well, too, although she's not exactly my picture for the character. For one, she doesn't look or sound strange... For another, I can't really buy her as the type of woman to stay with an abusive man.

I think Scarlett and Chris would be so perfect! First of all I thought in the original Audrey needed to be hotter for the doctor to want her, and just like Porter said, I thought the dentist should have been way hotter for Audrey to want to be with him. Steve Martin was not ugly but he wasn't cute either. It's just too bad Scarlett can not sing anywhere near as great as the original Audrey. Damn was she amazing in "Suddenly Seymor"!

Why would Audrey have to look or sound "strange"? Can someone explain?

But isn't this aa farce, Do yoy need to buy the character's actions ? :?

I was always sad they dinä't get theor orgiabl chioce for Audery in the movie Barbra Streisand :(

Or Cyndi Lauper who was asked, but turned it down.

But i guses getting Goldie from Rock-a-Doodle is pretty good too !

I was never crazy about the Betty Boop-like Baby doll voice that Ellen Greene used for Audrey.

But that's just personal taste ! :)

I didn't know Barbra Streisand was the original choice they would've liked for Audrey! She would've been so much better. I don't mind Ellen Greene, the voice is just so odd to me. But I guess it does make her more memorable. :P I can definitely see a resemblance between Greene and Lauper.
