Oscar nominations--predictions and reactions

Tomorrow morning, the Oscar noms will be announced. What do you think they will be?

The list is up and thank heavenly goodness, the list for Best Animated Feature category is far better this year than what the Golden Globes nominated.

So we are down to just nine awards this year? (No good Pixar films to help them this time, eh?). I really want to see The Artist win a few awards (I am hopefully seeing it this weekend with my family). If The Tree of Life wins something, I think my mom will not be happy as she hated that movie.


On the Animated Feature nominations, I want to say it's a good thing the Academy doesn't always suck up to Disney or Pixar (And I am still a fan of Pixar's films, but Cars 2 was awful and should'nt have been nominated for a Golden Globe),. Also, I haven't seen any of these films aside from Kung Fu Panda 2 (Which I highly doubt will win).

Overall, I feel... bemused. I've learned to not take the Oscars so seriously since they have flubbed so many times, but as a cinephile I find it necessary to keep up with the race.

I'll go by each of the main categories and share my thoughts.

Best Picture
To be honest, I haven't really caught up yet. I've only seen The Help, Midnight in Paris, and The Tree of Life. Of course I plan on seeing the others soon). Out of the three I've seen, I would want the opposite order of how I listed them to win. I'm surprised Moneyball was nominated, especially over The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (the Academy seems to love Fincher). I'm also surprised ELaEC got nominated, just because most of the reviews have been very mediocre.

Best Actor
I don't care too much about the Best Actor category, since it's usually pretty bland. I'm glad Leo wasn't nominated since he usually is... unfortunately, as we all know, Clooney will win despite delivering a just above average (not great) performance. I'd love to see Dujardin or Oldman win, just because they're not George and Brad.

Best Actress
I'm so happy for Michelle Williams. She's currently my favorite actress of the new generation and she's on her third Oscar nom at only 30 years old. Such a long way from Dawson's Creek! Of course Meryl Streep and Viola Davis were locks, and I hope Meryl doesn't win. She ALWAYS wins, and I am normally against giving the award out to people who should have won in the past but didn't, but she has enough. Let someone else get it. I'm happy Rooney Mara was nominated, though I'm upset Tilda Swinton and Elizabeth Olsen were snubbed.

Best Director
I don't care; I love Scorcese, Allen, and Malick. I love Spielberg, too, but War Horse was not good. Malick is the only one I can say really deserves the BD award this season.

Of course Meryl Streep and Viola Davis were locks, and I hope Meryl doesn't win. She ALWAYS wins, and I am normally against giving the award out to people who should have won in the past but didn't, but she has enough. Let someone else get it. I'm happy Rooney Mara was nominated, though I'm upset Tilda Swinton and Elizabeth Olsen were snubbed.

Meryl's actually only won a few times at the Academy Awards; she's been nominated tons, though (like 17 times). The last time she won, I think, was for Sophie's Choice in the 80s. I haven't seen The Iron Lady, though, so I have no idea how good her performance was. I, too, am excited to see Rooney Mara being nominated. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was excellent (possibly one of my favorites from 2011), so I'm glad she got a nomination; though, I don't think they'll pick a similar performance twice in a row (Natalie Portman's Nina gives off a sort of similar vibe to me--haha, maybe it's just me, though). Viola Davis was fantastic in The Help, so I'm rooting for her, too. I kind of want Viola to win, but it's not up to me.

With only two song nominations I think they could have made room for "Star Spangled Man", or "Life's a Happy Song". Of the two nominees I'm just hoping "Man or Muppet" wins.

I'm very disappointed that "Winnie the Pooh" was looked over for Best Animated Film. Yes, it was short, but it had the most heart for the animated films this year in my opinion.

"The Artist" has it in the bag for Best Picture. However, I'm happy to see "The Descendants", "The Help", "War Horse", and "Midnight in Paris" on the list as well. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of "The Tree of Life", but it confused me, and I'll probably watch it again soon to see if I can understand it. I still need to see "Moneyball", which I heard was VERY good. I'm very surprised and shocked at "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" getting a nomination. From what I heard, it wasn't very good.

I'm kind of sad that Alan Rickman wasn't recognized for his work on the final Harry Potter film, but I'm not surprised. I was happy, though, to see that "Bridesmaids" got nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay.

Other than that, the nominations seemed kind of predictable to me.

But yeah, I can understand movies like War Horse, Hugo, The Artist, and The Descendants to be nominated for Best Picture, but EL&IC, from what I heard, was terrible. So yeah, I know it will never win any Oscars.
