Tom and Jerry: Gene Deitch era

This era of Tom and Jerry has always intrigued me and it contains a few of my favorite Tom and Jerry shorts (like Buddies Thicker Than Water).

I know many Tom and Jerry fans dislike this era of shorts.

Who likes some shorts from this era and who would like to see a 'Tom and Jerry: The Gene Deitch Collection', released?

I'm not that familiar with the shorts, but I'd love a collection, so that it would wrap up my T&J collection. I've got the three Spotlight Collections (sadly STILL missing a couple of shorts - Cassanova Cat, and Mouse Cleaning) and the Chuck Jones set.

Of course, we also need a secondary character collection like the Butch & Spike shorts, etc.

I have only seen a few of these cartoons and I find them to be VERY different from the Hannah-Barbara era. The animation is very cheap as is the sound effects used and the plots are far more zany.

BAH! I really hate discs that repackage existing content without really adding anything, and "Best of" collections.

I noticed they didn't even include a Gene Deitch cartoon in this, if they are trying to show all the incarnations of T&J, they missed one... I wonder if WB is going to try and quietly forget the Gene Deitch cartoons.

I guess the only good thing about this is you could see a sample of the later works (on disc 2) and know that you wouldn't want to go near some of the stuff like T&J Kids, or T&J Comedy Show...

I have a feeling that these often edited shorts will be the censored versions on this set:

I doubt that either will ever be released on home video again in the US.

I hated the Gene Deitch era. Everything about those foreign made ones are so cheap that it felt like a giant leap back from what MGM was doing. I personally loved the 40's MGM ones (real money was put into these), the cinemascope 50's ones are just alright (they shortened the length and simplified the style to save money), and the Chuck Jones ones (basically as if Warner Bros. had made them) were a comeback after the crappy foreign ones.

I seriously never thought the Gene Deitch ones were considered canon.

I know . . . I'd love to see both but Mouse Cleaning was a particular favorite of mine, even as a kid. They played it often on one of the local stations in the early 80's, edited but not too horribly.

I never really cared much for most of the Gene Deitch T&J's; didn't like the human guy that often appeared, didn't like the music, the gags, and especially the animation.

I'd like to pick up the Chuck Jones set one of these days though; I have the 3 other volumes.

I'm in the same boat here. Have the other three, but need the Chuck Jones set still. I guess this upcoming set can be considered low priority. I was hoping it would have the missing shorts. I do have a VHS release with Casanova Cat though. I don't recall if I have one with Mouse Cleaning.

Heh heh, so hard to keep up, isn't it? I don't like the Chuck Jones as much as the older HB ones, but they're still enjoyable and I'm a big fan of Chuck Jones anyway. It's just that they weren't really his characters to begin with and it felt a little awkward.

And as for the missing shorts, at least we've been able to catch them on youtube.

You know, Buddies, Thicker Than Water was my favorite short from that era too. I did also like Landing Stripling, Dickie Moe, Switchin' Kitten, and Tall In The Trap. I'm suprised that one if not 2 of the shorts dosen't/will not appear in the 70th Anniversary Deluxe Edition set. I'll admit that the Gene Deitch era may not have been the best, but it's still history. Warner should consider releasing the entire Gene Deitch era shorts on it's own DVD collection.

Ha, yeah, I only just today got Season 3 of the Muppet Show and I only have the first two Looney Tunes Golden Collections (don't get me started on stuff like Animaniacs, I only have Vol. 2 of that one; hate getting stuff out of order!). Yeah, I feel the same about Jones and his shorts.

I just watched all of the Gene Deitch shorts, and I was NOT impressed... It's all been said before - cheap animation, weird sound effects, strange human characters, poor stories, and so on... I may watch a marathon in chronological order someday, and I'll see if I like any of the Deitch era better then, but I don't think there is a single one that I'd consider a "favorite."

For that matter, I saw a smattering of the Chuck Jones shorts, and they didn't really impress me either. Of course, to give them a chance, I'll need to watch the whole Chuck Jones T&J Collection, but the ones I saw just seemed to be frenetic chases without any real story. I really think I prefer the original Hanna Barbera shorts, most of my favorites are going to be from that era (Touche, Pussycat, etc.)
