Oh, and with what Duster said.... compare the last lines of "Somewhere That's Green" to "Part of Your World:"

Far from (Out of) Skid Row (the sea), I dream (Wish I) We'll go (Could be) Somwhere (Part of) That's green (That world)....

It's not only the very similar tunes, but the similar sentence structure and main idea!

Songs that Sound Similar

Actually I don't remember who said it but someone said to Alan Menken (or did he say it himself?) that "Part of That World" is Ariel's "Somewhere That's Green". I think it was a bit intentional... *wink*

I believe on the audio commentary on the PE of TLM, Menken says that he an Ashman used to jokingly call the song "Somehere That's Wet."

Oh, and I just thought of another Ashman repetition! During the song "I Can Go the Distance," the instrumental part immediately after the part of the song that occurs during the the journey to the temple sounds almost exactly like "Hellfire." Just go listen to it.

Disney Duster wrote:Once I was going to try to make a video of all the Alan Menken music that sounds similar to his other music, but I didn't want to make anyone sad.

But now...

"I can show you the world..."

"Poor unfortunate souls..."

"It's not enough to take the one you love for granted..."

"Little shop, little shop of horrors..."

It's still all new music people, it just happens to sound a little alike. Too many things to count are very alike, yet very different, and new. If nothing was a little similar to other things, we couldn't even understand it, let alone accept and like it.

But I still love 'im!

EDIT: Oops! I posted this before I realized this thread had a second page. Oh well.

There have been numerous times when I started humming one song only to find myself humming a part of another one. I can't think of an exact example right now (the mind is a fantastic thing – the more you try to remember something, the more it eludes you).

Anyway, speaking of Alan Menken, I thought these two sounded similar...

Also, compare this:

(6:18 to 6:21)

with this:

(0:50 to 0:53)

And when it comes to mash-ups, a couple of months ago I discovered this:

Don't forget Number 1 by Tinchy Stryder:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc7W8Q-g9Lg

I heard this today on someone's mix CD (I think it was this, anyway, I couldn't hear it very well except for the hook...)

I think it's strange the way the copyright owner for the Stone's song got 100% of the rights to the Verve's version. Read about it at wikipedia for those two songs.

It was a song using a sample of a cover...
First, they got permission to use the sample.
Second, the orchestra that did the cover should have some say in it, since they had the rights to cover the song (they sued The Verve, but since all profits were ordered given to the Stones owner, what was the point?)
Third, whatever was added by The Verve should give them some rights as well - evidently it was used by some ads without their knowledge.
Fourth, Keith Richards said "If The Verve can write a better song, they can keep the money." Of course, The Stones don't own the work, a former business manager does...
Fifth, the Stones song is rumored itself to be based on an old gospel song...

My head hurts!

^ So, I'm on Wikipedia, going from a page to a different page like I always do, and I ended up on the "My Sweet Lord" page, and there was legal trouble between "My Sweet Lord" and "He's So Fine":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Sweet_Lord
Following the song's release, musical similarities between "My Sweet Lord" and The Chiffons' hit "He's So Fine" led to a lengthy legal battle over the rights to the composition. Billboard magazine, in an article dated 6 March 1971, stated that Harrison's royalty payments from the recording had been halted worldwide. Harrison stated that he was inspired to write "My Sweet Lord" after hearing the Edwin Hawkins Singers' "Oh Happy Day".

In the U.S. federal court decision in the case, known as Bright Tunes Music v. Harrisongs Music,[2] Harrison was found to have "subconsciously" copied the earlier song. He was ordered to surrender the majority of royalties from "My Sweet Lord" and partial royalties from All Things Must Pass. Former manager Allen Klein, who earlier had supported Harrison's case, became the owner of Bright Tunes, after they parted ways. In the long run this worked against Klein[improper synthesis?], but it resulted in the case continuing for years in court. Interestingly Harrison claimed in a BBC interview with Annie Nightingale that the Judge in the case said that he liked Harrison's version of "My Sweet Lord" less.

The Chiffons would later record "My Sweet Lord" to capitalise on the publicity generated by the lawsuit. Country singer Jody Miller recorded a country chart top-five cover of "He's So Fine", which plays on the two songs' similarities by featuring the same guitar breaks played on the Harrison recording.

Shortly thereafter, Harrison (who would eventually buy the rights to "He's So Fine")[3] wrote and recorded a song about the court case named "This Song", which includes "This tune has nothing 'Bright' about it." "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "Rescue Me" are also mentioned in the record.
That sucks. I mean, yes, there is a similarity, but they don't sound all that similar...

Here's a comparison- the left speaker plays "My Sweet Lord" and the right one plays "He's So Fine"...they slowed down "He's So Fine" to make their point.

They compliment each other well, and they're similar, but they have enough differences to know that they're not essentially the same song. Poor George.

I almost forgot about a thread I posted, comparing A Step in the Right Direction (from Bedknobs and Broomsticks) to A Spoonful of Sugar (from Mary Poppins):

^ That animatronic robin is pretty interesting, does anyone know how they did it? If it was stop motion, or something with wires etc., they did a great job joining the frames or hiding the wires...

According to the DVD, it was an animatronic controlled by wires that went into Julie's sleeve and were actually inside of her costume.

I'm not a fan of either Lady Gaga or this guy but my sister was listening to this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyG1FG3H6rY

And I immediately looked at her and said "Wow, he is ripping off Just Dance so badly." She didn't get what I meant (which shocked me because she is a massive Gaga fan) so I started singing Just Dance along with the other song. Her jaw hit the floor because it matches up perfectly. It's the exact same song. Turns out I'm not the only one who thinks so.
