God I hope not....no more package films. I simply refuse to buy the new SA/TC set. It looks cheap and it seems like Disney doesn't care about their "classics" when they do this.

I don't mean "package films" as in Melody Time, Make Mine Music...etc. in general. I mean when they put two films on one disc.

Though I will probably have to wait a while, I would love to have Aladdin on Blu Ray next year.

Online petitions are useless, if you want to see Black Cauldron released uncut, a hand-written letter campaign would be better.

I am actually shocked that Robin Hood, Sword in the Stone, Aristocats, etc. were lucky enough that they were considered for special edition treatment.
I wouldn't call any of those editions 'special'. What was special about them? The carton sleeve?

I want a good special eition. Not even necessarily 2-disc. Just give me a worthy 'Making of' and/or audio commentary. Most of all, I want a decent special edition of The Rescuers!
Agreed. Maybe that's where my shock was warranted. The studio chose the less than Most Popular with Today's Kiddie Want to See Hanna Montanah Audiences movies and gave them the editiions that show us what the studio really think of the movies - not all that much. What I suspected all along.

tlc38tlc38 wrote:Based on what we got in 2008, I think what has already been announced is probably all we're going to get in 2009. This is only counting the Disney animated classics.

2008:
The Aristocats (Feb. 5, 2008)
101 Dalmatians (Mar. 4, 2008)
Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros (Apr. 29, 2008)
The Sword in the Stone (Jun. 17, 2008)
Sleeping Beauty (Oct. 7, 2008) (also on Blu-ray)

Announced for 2009:
Oliver & Company (Feb. 3, 2009)
Pinocchio (Mar. 10, 2009) (also on Blu-ray)
Bolt (Mar. 24, 2009) (also on Blu-ray)
Lilo & Stitch (Mar. 24, 2009)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Oct. 6, 2009) (also on Blu-ray)

Announced non-animated animated classics for 2009:
Mary Poppins (Jan. 27, 2009)
A Bug's Life (unknown release date) (also on Blu-ray)
Monsters, Inc. (unknown release date) (also on Blu-ray)

Announced so far for 2010:
Fantasia (Mar. 2, 2010) (also on Blu-ray)
Fantasia 2000 (Mar. 2, 2010) (also on Blu-ray)
Beauty and the Beast (Oct. 5, 2010) (also on Blu-ray)

Movies I wish would be re-released in 2009 and/or 2010 on DVD and Blu-ray:
Dumbo (my favorite DAC and the "Big Top" release was very poor...2011 will be the 70th anniversary)
Make Mine Music (2011 will be the 65th anniversary)
Fun and Fancy Free (2012 will be the 65th anniversary)
Melody Time (2008 was the 60th anniversary)
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (2009 will be the 60th anniversary)
Alice in Wonderland (2011 will be the 60th anniversary)
The Rescuers (2012 will be the 35th anniversary)
The Black Cauldron (2010 will be the 25th anniversary)
The Great Mouse Detective (2011 will be the 25th anniversary)
The Rescuers Down Under (2010 will be the 20th anniversary)
The Hunchback of Notre Dame (2011 will be the 15th anniversary)
Hercules (2012 will be the 15th anniversary)
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
The difference between this year and last year is how close/early the releases are this year vs last year. By March 24th, 4 of the 5 animated announced will already have been released with two of them released on the very same day. That makes me wonder if something will end up coming out during the summer (as of now nothing is announced for the summer months).

I thought "A Bug Life" and "Monsters, Inc" were just getting Blu-ray releases. I didn't know they were getting DVD re-releases as well (as you make it sound)

You can scratch that off your list coz it's coming at the spring of 2011 in Platinum Edition too.

Word. No one really takes internet petitions seriously.

I agree that this yearit looks as if we'll see an unusual amount of re-releases. Normally mixed in with the animated classics we'll get re-releases of animated sequels and stuff, but this year we wont be getting anything... This is what the release schedule really looked like to me last year

2008
The Aristocats (Feb. 5, 2008)
101 Dalmatians (Mar. 4, 2008)
Saludos Amigos/The Three Caballeros (Apr. 29, 2008)
The Sword in the Stone (Jun. 17, 2008)
The Jungle Book 2 (Jun. 17, 2008)
Ariel's Begining (Aug. 26, 2008)
101 Dalmatians 2 (Sep. 12, 2008)
Sleeping Beauty (Oct. 7, 2008)
Tinkerbell (Oct. 28, 2008)

If you throw them into the mix with no plans on releasing any new sequels what are the most logical and equal films to release? The animated classics that typically underperform! I also highly doubt that disney will go this year leaving a huge gap in between march and october.

2009 givens
Oliver & Company (Feb. 3, 2009)
Pinocchio (Mar. 10, 2009)
Bolt (Mar. 24, 2009)
Lilo & Stitch (Mar. 24, 2009)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Oct. 6, 2009)
Tinkerbell's second film (Oct, 2009)

I can see The Black Cauldron being added. If it's being released internationally then it's a good sign for a U.S. release. I could also see some more double feature packs. Maybe this year we'll find a Make Mine Music and Melody Time package. Though I can also see these being cross promoted with Fantasia somewhat so maybe that wont come till 2010. I also feel like The Rescuers and Rescuers Down Under could be good summer releases. Overall I could see Disney releasing 2-3 more animated classics next year.

I think the main two I'm waiting for are:

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
and
Hercules

Since these are 'newer classics', I think the transfers, in particular the sound, could be extraordinary!

Black Cauldron coming out on Special Edition? Well that's cool, I'm shocked that one is coming out, but I do like that one, not sure if it will be worth a double dip though.

Well, I bought the current DVD release for TBC in September and never watched it (haven't actually seen TBC at all, but I'm looking forward to soon).

I hope the re-release features outtakes - they don't have to be merged back in, but, to include them would be nice!

I'm not surprised. The Thai distributor listing it was confirmation enough for me.

I expect this around June. As of right now, the gap between March's BOLT/Lilo & Stitch SE DVDs and October's Snow White re-release is sizeable. I'm going to assume TBC will come out sometime around June/July to fill the void.

I was expecting a trailer on the Oliver DVD, so this is an earlier confirmation than I thought would happen.

I want a new edition of Hercules, preferably a 2 disc set. It's probably the last animated feature from the 90's I'm still waiting on. And there seems to be some evidence to it getting a new SE, because I think it may have gone back into the vault, since a lot of stores around here had it and I was thinking of picking it up, and now it's nowhere to be found, although the local SuperStore flyer currently has it featured under it's 2 for $20 deal, but I haven't been in one of their stores to find it.

There's also a number of live action features I want to see get rereleased: namely Flubber and Jungle 2 Jungle. Basically the same story with those two as well, seen it around but have been holding out, now it's disappeared, so maybe their on their way.

Both of those titles are scheduled for a price drop in mid-February. I think IF they are to be prepped for special editions, they will probably be either way late this year, or more likely early next year.

I think TBC may be it for this year. We've come close to matching last years output now. Herc/Hunch will probably be used to beef up 2010.

I propose someone make an online petition that stops all online petitions from being made. Of course, that would be somewhat confusing, since it'd be an online petition asking that online petitions stop. Still...
  • We the undersigned wish for all online petitions to cease.

We realize, of course, that signing this petition negates the entire purpose of the petition - to cease all online petitions.

However, consider this the anti-petition. By signing it, we show that we're tired of petitions.

That of course, makes no sense at all. A petition made to stop petitions won't really stop a petition as it is a petition itself.

Therefore, if you sign this, you're not helping the cause at all.

So don't sign it. Instead, where it says "Signature" put "This is not (your name)".

But that's silly and stupid. Just like online petitions.
Anyway, regarding the news about a The Black Cauldron: Special Edition, all I can do is...

:pink: - "YAY! Maybe now we'll get that restored and anamorphic video that was already released in France!"

 - This won't be a ten-disc 23rd Anniversary Edition that I had hoped for and often joke about.

 - I expect at most the all that we'll likely get in the new release is the spiffy new anamorphic/restored transfer, the GC extras sans trailer, and a silly new game.

:x - This will more than likely come with a slipcover.
