I know that in 2002 Disney announced the movie "The Snow Queen" and I know that this movie has been deleted in September 2003.

I found on the web an article about Alan Menken in which the journalist said "The Snow Queen" will be an upcoming Disney movie...

I know that Menken created a great love ballad for "The Snow Queen", entitled "Love can't be denied"


Do you know something about this new animated feature?

I hope to see a Snow Queen movie!

As far as I know, the Snow Queen is now a musical in one of the Japan parks and uses Alan Menken's songs developed for the film. I'd love to hear what he wrote. Anyone know if there is a CD or where you can hear the music?


The reason the film was cancelled was because Glen Keane was going to direct both, then decided directing was too hard and he'd just do Rapuzel so Snow Queen was scrapped. I had heard talk a year ago that it was ressurected again though.

I remember the murmurs about it coming back as well. I guess that depends largely on how well the show is doing in Tokyo Disneyland. I havn't heard anything about it though.

I think it'd be a fantastic idea to animate it!

Well, the only thing I could found on Wikipedia was this under the upcoming projects of Alan Menken

"The Snow Queen set to debut at Tokyo DisneySea with Amon Miyamoto directing and John Weidman as the bookwriter and Glenn Slater the lyricist."

I haven't seen any pictures or anything from the show in tokyo at all!

This would make a pretty great movie if they ever decided to push it back that way. I'd be excited for it.

I read that the stage musical for Tokyo Disney Seas was cancelled...would be interesting to know why (perhaps because the story has nothing to do with the sea?).

Personally, I think that The Snow Queen is prime material for a Disney animated feature (for the record, here is the original fairy-tale by Hans Christian Andersen). It truly captures the imagination, yet like all the great fairy-tales, it is equally a very human story, being a story of how true friendship can triumph over any evil no matter how great. However, despite the source material really only needing a few tweaks here and there (it is a bit episodic), I'm worried that if it is made into a film, all that could remain are the title character (who isn't the protagonist per se) and the mystical Arctic settings. I read about one outline given for the film in the book Disney War (granted, this was recorded when executives pretty much made up the story at Disney, but still, this could be what even the animators/story teams wanted...) that was essentially The Taming of the Shrew in the Arctic Circle, which is a real shame, since had they made it like that, they would have messed up such a beautiful story big time.

The only two SNOW QUEENS I've seen are the Russian animated version "Snezhnaya koroleva" released in 1957 (Art Linkletter was the host), and a more recent BBC version released in 2006 (starring Sydney White and Patrick Stewart (voice)).
The former was traditionally animated, the latter live action with extensive blue-screen and CGI.

update: I noted the Warners 1998 version on IMDB, and (prodded by customer comment) vaguely remember it not being so great.

And yes, Snow Queen would be an excellent story for Disney Productions to animate.

How about Warner Bros' 2d animated "The Snow Queen" and its sequel "Snow Queen's Revenge" or the anime "The Snow Queen"?
