That's true. Ariel and Rapunzel look uniformed but Moana stands out. The art used for her is from the style guide for tie-in movie merch by character designer Bill Schwab. I'm assuming when Moana is officially inducted into the line-up, they'll make new clipart for her specifically for the DP brand.

This is an interesting study on the popularity of the Disney Princesses in the UK based on how many people have watched or not watched their films.

Snow White is the most watched DP film by a wide margin.
Aladdin is the second most watched followed very closely by Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty which are about tied.
Beauty and the Beast and Frozen come after and are also tied while The Little Mermaid was less watched than both of them.
Pocahontas came after Mermaid which I thought was actually quite good for a film that Disney likes to ignore most of the time.
After this Tangled and Brave were about tied.
Mulan was less watched than both Tangled and Brave and makes up the bottom three least watched DP films alongside Moana and The Princess and the Frog which are dead-last.

I liked the fact that out of the top four Disney Princess films, three of them are Walt Disney's very own classics. Beauty and the Beast is basically fifth, or tied in fifth place with Frozen, so I don't think that's very low. I actually felt The Little Mermaid was low since out of the classic six Disney Princess films, it ranked last.

Yeah I can understand why it is surprising that BATB isn't even higher. Maybe the live-action film being such a hit is responsible for this. A lot of new viewers and the youngest generation will watch that instead of the animated one.

Interesting. God, she already said she wasn't a princess! I guess the whole "just a metaphorical princess" thing Disney does will have to be used. But I hate it. It should be Disney, not Pixar, girls who are actual princesses!

Moana is the only avatar that looks bad. It's because they drew over the CG clip-art instead of creating a new drawing of her. I hope they start making new art for her when she finally enters the line-up instead of relying on old material.

So it's officially been confirmed now. Can't say I'm surprised considering she fits in just as well as Merida and Mulan. Honestly, all the princesses whose names start with M are real outliers for this franchise. You could even throw in Tiana since her name was originally Maddie.

I don't like the idea of an American princess. Pocahontas is an exception and even her status is debatable since some Native Americans like the representation and some are against the idea of an Indian princess. Frankly, I'm biased since I like Pocahontas so I'd keep her in, but I think fairy tale status aside, she generally fits in quite well.

I said before that in my opinion M&C tried to say that she is a princess regardless of marketing with Maui dismissing her afterwards, bit people disagreed with me. Either way that line is not representative of the character, who does fit into the Disney Princess archetype.
