Neil Patrick Harris will host the 87th Academy Awards, airing February 22nd on ABC.

Watch the nominees announced by Alfonso Cuarσn, J.J. Abrams, Chris Pine and Cheryl Boone Isaacs:

The 87th Academy Awards announced eight nominees for Best Picture.

Nominees

Picture
American Sniper

Boyhood
Birdman
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

Analysis: The Academy opts for only eight nominees this year, a first since switching to a variable field. Based on all the other nominations, it seems pretty clear that Foxcatcher just missed the cut and would have been in line for the 9th spot. Beyond that, nothing is certain.

Predicted: 8/8 (Though I did have Gone Girl in ninth and assumed it was in.)

For the third consecutive year, Bradley Cooper earned an Academy Award nomination as actor. He also added his first Best Picture nomination as a producer of "American Sniper."

Actor
Steve Carell, Foxcatcher
Bradley Cooper, American Sniper
Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
Michael Keaton, Birdman
Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything

Predicted: 4/5 (I had Cooper just missing in favor of Selma's David Oyelowo.)

Best Actress ended up being the only category in which Gone Girl was nominated.

Actress
Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night
Julianne Moore, Still Alice
Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
Reese Witherspoon, Wild
Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything

Predicted: 4/5 (Didn't see Cotillard being the rare foreign performance to sneak in; I thought Amy Adams would get nomination #6.)

As sadistic, exacting jazz band instructor Terence Fletcher, Supporting Actor nominee J.K. Simmons is one of the surest bets of this award season.

Supporting Actor
J.K. Simmons, Whiplash
Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
Edward Norton, Birdman
Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
Robert Duvall, The Judge

Predicted: 5/5 (Not happy to be right; The Judge doesn't deserve to be an Oscar-nominated film.)

Supporting Actress
Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
Laura Dern, Wild
Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game
Emma Stone, Birdman
Meryl Streep, Into the Woods

Predicted: 4/5 (Missed Laura Dern, who seemed to be out of the running, by picking A Most Violent Year's Jessica Chastain in fifth instead.)

Director
Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Birdman
Richard Linklater, Boyhood
Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
Morten Tydlum, The Imitation Game

Predicted: 3/5 (Picked Selma's Ava DuVernay and Whiplash's Damien Chazelle over Miller and Tydlum from this deep contender pool.)

Outside the St. James Theatre, Riggan (Michael Keaton) has a chat with his substitute leading man Mike Shiner (Edward Norton).

Original Screenplay
Birdman
Boyhood
Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Nightcrawler

Predicted: 3/5 (Foxcatcher and Nightcrawler were my top two next in line, but I saw Selma and Mr. Turner getting in over them.)

Adapted Screenplay
American Sniper
The Imitation Game
Inherent Vice
The Theory of Everything
Whiplash

Predicted: 3/5 (Had American Sniper next in line and the snubbed Gone Girl as most likely to get in. Also missed Inherent Vice by picking Wild. Relieved Whiplash didn't miss out due to its classification confusion. This award is now its to win.)

Film Editing
American Sniper
Birdman
Boyhood
The Imitation Game
Whiplash

Predicted: 4/5 (Had Gone Girl in and The Imitation Game as the next in line.)

Equipped with new armor and defense techniques, Baymax and Hiro soar above San Fransokyo in the Academy Award-nominated animated feature "Big Hero 6."

Animated Feature
Big Hero 6
The Boxtrolls
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Song of the Sea
The Tale of Princess Kaguya

Predicted: 4/5 (Had Song of the Sea in sixth and The Lego Movie in first. Absolutely stunned by its exclusion here.)

Foreign Language Film
Ida
Leviathan
Tangerines
Timbuktu
Wild Tales

Predicted: 4/5 (Had Force Majeure over Timbuktu.)

Documentary Feature
Citizenfour
Finding Vivian Maier
Last Days in Vietnam
The Salt in the Earth
Virunga

Predicted: 3/5 (I predicted Life Itself and The Case Against 8 in the slots that went to Finding Vivian Maier and The Salt in the Earth.)

One of the best films of 2014, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" will likely have to settle for a Visual Effects nomination.

Visual Effects
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
Interstellar
X-Men: Days of Future Past

Predicted: 3/5 (I wrongly had The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and Godzilla in over Captain America and X-Men.)

Cinematography
Birdman
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Ida
Mr. Turner
Unbroken

Predicted: 4/5 (Had Grand Budapest next in line and Gone Girl in.)

The story of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is relayed in 1968 by proprietor Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham) to a young writer (Jude Law).

Production Design
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Into the Woods
Mr. Turner

Predicted: 4/5 (Missed The Imitation Game by picking Hobbit.)

Costume Design
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Inherent Vice
Into the Woods
Maleficent
Mr. Turner

Predicted: 4/5 (Picked Big Eyes, which got nothing, over double nominee Inherent Vice.)

For large noses and cauliflower ears, "Foxcatcher" should be a shoo-in for the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar.

Makeup and Hairstyling
Foxcatcher
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Guardians of the Galaxy

Predicted: 2/3 (Had Grand Budapest in fourth and Maleficent getting in instead.)

I'd have expected Into the Woods to make it, until it missed the shortlist of seven.

Original Song
"Everything Is Awesome", The Lego Movie
"Glory", Selma'
"Grateful", Beyond the Lights
"I'm Not Gonna Miss You", Glen Campbell:...I'll Be Me
"Lost Stars", Begin Again

Predicted: 3/5 (Missed "Grateful" and "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" by picking "Big Eyes" and Noah's "Mercy Is." The Animated Feature snub gives The Lego Movie the upper hand here.)

Original Score
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Interstellar
Mr. Turner
The Theory of Everything

Predicted: 3/5 (Missed Mr. Turner and Grand Budapest. Had Unbroken and Gone Girl getting in.)

Sound Editing
American Sniper
Birdman
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Interstellar
Unbroken

Predicted: 3/5 (Missed Birdman and Hobbit...guessed Fury and Godzilla in the last two slots instead.)

Sound Mixing
American Sniper
Birdman
Interstellar
Unbroken
Whiplash

Predicted: 3/5 (Whiplash and Birdman got in over Into the Woods, despite the category's history of honoring musicals, and Guardians of the Galaxy.)

Overall: 78/108 correct (72%)

Documentary Short
Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1
Joanna
Our Curse
The Reaper
White Earth

Animated Short
The Bigger Picture
The Dam Keeper
Feast
Me and My Moulton
A Single Life

Live-Action Short
Aya
Boogaloo and Graham
Butter Lamp
Parvaneh
The Phone Call

Predicted: Didn't predict, gladly.

Analysis: Apart from The Lego Movie's omission from Animated Feature and the Best Picture field of only eight, there weren't too many huge surprises this morning. Gone Girl performed much worse than expected, only picking up the Best Actress nomination. Selma made it into Best Picture, but only Original Song beyond that. Foxcatcher did very well and better than many expected, but still somehow missed the Best Picture cut. Birdman made it into almost every category it was eligible for, its only noticeable miss being Editing. The Grand Budapest Hotel featured extensively, which not many would have seen just a few weeks ago based on past Wes Anderson movies' underrecognition and its release all the way back in March. Its continued prominence at guild awards foretold a big day for it, however.
American Sniper had been written off until the past week or so really, but Warner Bros. has a history of sneaking into the race as does Clint Eastwood. Interstellar, once perceived as a Gravity-type game changer, settled for just five tech category nominations. While many were hopeful for Nightcrawler, which earned but a single nomination for Original Screenplay, I always figured it wasn't the Oscars' kind of movie.

Multi-Nominated Films by Number of Nominations:
Birdman – 9
The Grand Budapest Hotel – 9
The Imitation Game – 8
American Sniper – 6
Boyhood – 6
Foxcatcher – 5
Interstellar – 5
